The first drug developed to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) has been rejected twice since.
But a coalition of doctors, psychologists and urologists are saying they have found the answer for a study that is now in the final stages of testing.
The drug, called Cialis, is now in trials for erectile dysfunction, and the Food and Drug Administration has approved it for sale to men who have erectile dysfunction. The FDA, in a new report, says that it has made it easier for men to get erections.
The drug’s label said it “may help” men with ED, but it isn’t clear how long that may be.
The study is one of a series of studies designed to test the drug’s ability to help men who are struggling with ED to achieve and maintain an erection.
“This is the first drug approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction,” said Dr. Steven Nissen, a urologist at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.
Nissen was on the panel of urologists at a meeting in April, and asked that the panel give the drug a chance to be approved as a treatment for ED. The drug is currently being studied for its ability to improve sexual function.
“What we are seeing is that it is really the drug that’s working better for some people,” said Nissen, who was on the panel.
In the study, Nissen and his colleagues assessed a sample of about 300 men, recruited from a large U. S. sample of men over 40.
The men were randomly assigned to receive either a placebo or a treatment that did not contain any placebo.
They did not get any erection in response to the treatment, but reported that they still had trouble getting erections.
They were also asked to complete a questionnaire that included questions about their daily activities and sexual health.
In the questionnaire, they asked about their experiences with the drug, how effective it was, their personal experiences, their health, their sexual relationships, and how they felt about the drug. They also asked about their expectations for the drug, what they wanted to try, how often they would like to try it, and their overall satisfaction.
The men also were given a questionnaire about their relationships, and the researchers said that the women who did not take the drug showed no improvement in their erections.
“It certainly is an important finding that is making a difference in men with ED who are not in the same boat as men who are interested in sexual activity,” Nissen said.
Dr. Elizabeth Kavaler, a urologist at the Mayo Clinic, said she is very excited about the results.
“We are trying to get the first FDA approval,” she said. “I’m sure this study will be important to that.”
The drug is also being studied for other reasons, too, because it can cause side effects. The Food and Drug Administration has approved it for men who have erectile dysfunction.
In the study, the men took Cialis for six months and were then given an injection of 5 milligrams of Sildenafil, a medication that treats ED. The researchers found that the men who took the medication were able to get an erection as quickly as they had expected.
“We have to give people a second chance at a healthy life,” Nissen said.
“This is a very important drug,” he said. “We have to give people a second chance in the bedroom.”
The drug has been rejected twice since the study was stopped because the study showed that the men did not improve with the drug.
The drug is being studied for the second time since it was approved in March for treatment of ED, but Nissen said the next step is to look at a placebo for that reason.
“We are trying to get the first FDA approval,” he said. “We have to give people a second chance at a healthy life.”
The FDA has made similar warnings about the drug to a group of men who were prescribed the drug for ED.
“We’ve been very aware of these risks,” Nissen said. “But we’re not ready to make any changes.”
In the study, the researchers did not get any erection in response to the treatment.
1.Nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate): Cialis and nitrates both lower blood pressure. Taking them together can cause a significant and potentially life-threatening drop in blood pressure (hypotension), leading to dizziness, fainting, or even heart attack or stroke. It is contraindicated to use Cialis with nitrates or recreational "poppers" (amyl nitrites).
2.Alpha-blockers (e.g., prazosin, terazosin, tamsulosin): Both Cialis and alpha-blockers relax blood vessels, which can lead to excessive blood pressure reduction when used together. This may result in dizziness, fainting, or orthostatic hypotension (a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing). If needed, your doctor may adjust the dosage or recommend spacing the medications.
3.Other antihypertensive drugs (e.g., atenolol, propranolol, enalapril, lisinopril): Cialis can enhance the blood-pressure-lowering effects of these medications. While this interaction is usually less severe than with nitrates or alpha-blockers, it can still cause dizziness or fainting in sensitive individuals. Close monitoring of blood pressure is recommended.
